Raised in Antioch, Tennessee, Chevelle grew up in a multicultural environment with parents who worked long hours to create a better life for their family. That sacrifice gave him an early understanding of work ethic, but it also meant much of his identity had to be discovered on his own.

His older brother introduced him to the culture, and what began as watching him rap and freestyle eventually became Chevelle’s own obsession. He started rhyming as a kid, freestyling at lunch tables and anywhere a beat could be found. Music gave him a place to turn insecurity, frustration, humor, ambition and the experience of feeling like an outsider into something he could control.
